... more traditional food like baked cabbage with meat.
A route which I especially recommend, and which I do more or less once every 2 years, is a trail to Chata pri Zelenom Plese (literally: a house next to a green lake). It takes about 3 hours to get there, and the walk is not too taxing even for a beginner. It's a peaceful place with a lake, a cosy hostel and the mountains. There are a few trails than ...

Oravsky Podzamok is built on a huge rock over a vast plain, thus the view is really stunning. Moreover, most of the chambers are well-preserved. The castle has several levels, and the highest ones are not always available. It's because the passages between them are narrow and slippery, and it's not recommended to walk them in the rain or frost, and also the tour guides will ...
Caught the 5:30am bus from Poprad to make sure that we could get some good connections to Krakow, as read it can take 4hrs to get there. What a load of rubbish! The buses at the border, Lysa Polana on the Slovakia side (which is basically a car park and a few closed buildings which look pretty empty), are not remotely synchronised and the earliest bus to Zakopane is at 8.55am (it ...

... driver. All we heard in english was that a very warm wind had arrived yesterday and basically all the snow in Zakopane was now melted. Great. Not having any idea how far Zakopane was from Krakow the journey seemed to last forever and we didn't have a watch. Gazed out the window the entire journey to see the Polish landscape of triangular houses obviously constructed to be covered in snow except there wasn't any around. Soon realised that Poland was definitely ...
Zakopane, Poland oliviar22... go hiking that afternoon. I had had it in my head for weeks that I wanted to climb somewhere that offered a view into the Slovakian Tatras, and as we had more than six hours of daylight left I thought the 2004m peak of Kopa Kondracka sounded like a good destination. We set off about 3:20pm, making it to the familiar lodge of Kondratowa Hali soon after 4pm. It was then a gradual climb to ridge of Sucha Wierch Kondracki, which doubled as the ...
Zakopane, Poland will... set aside for a visit to a traditional polish restaurant where Blake ordered the biggest schnitzel in the world. Those readers who regularly accompany Blake and I to Una's will be interested to note that this schnitzel was about 3 times the size of Blake's head and that is no exaggeration... we literally gasped when the meal was brought out and it took us some convincing to realise that it was not meant for at least 3 people to share. Blake, Sarah and I then ...
Krakow, Poland mooskaa... my head was which direction I was to go. My time to head back to New Zealand was getting close and I needed to get back to Istanbul Turkey. On top of this I was ill. Also the price to fly was massive and more than I could justify.... but I was 48 hours travel (at least) from Turkey by Land. while not knowing which way my health was going I was a little worried. I decided I would get some sleep and asked the Lord if He would sort it out for me, knowing that He had not let me down this far....
Zapatane, Poland mshields... are quite extensive and the view from the top is amazing. Since I arrived at around 10, I was ahead of the glut of tourists; many were still coming up when I started the trek down at 1. The weather was perfect, and as I ate my little picnic by the ancient Celtic wall foundations, I was rather awed by the fact that I was there, sitting on cool grass, looking out over miles and miles of foreign hills and valleys, farmland and forest.
Levoca, Slovakia gadelle... ice cream and got some rolls for breakfast. We walked back to the main square to watch the crowds and listen once again to the strange taps played by a bugler every hour from a church tower window. The tune always stops abruptly. Rumor has it that the medieval bugler was shot in the throat by an arrow on that very note. More research says that an American traveler in the 1920's made up the whole story. About 9 pm, we headed back to the railroad station. We claimed our ...
