Split - quiet but good weather

... day and the first day I've worn thongs since Bruges!!!!
Walked to the beach and waded in the water but too cold to go swimming.
Went to Fife for dinner which was recommended by Peter from the hostel and also the barman on Friday night as the best place in town to get good local food at local prices.
Had an awesome meal of Sarma (mince wrapped in cabbage leaves) and Fozol - bean and ham dish.

Sunday went to market ...

What we thought would be a vacation...

... chilled out and went to bed.

Of course what we didn’t know is that the next day, the island was going to experience a full on storm. We were told it might rain a little that day, but raining a little was a big understatement. From the time we woke up the next morning until after we left two days later, it was POURING down rain and VERY windy. We were house-bound for 2 days. The only time we went out was one evening when the rain ...

... something quiet. This spot is exactly what we were hoping for! There are only about fifty people at the campsite, which means that it is private without us being the only ones at the campsite, which seems to have been the trend lately! We bargained with the lady at the desk and paid for the cheapest spot but were able to park in the most expensive with the best views…they are unbelievable. Sailboats are going past now and we ...

Diocletian's Palace, circa 300AD

Split's star attraction is Diocletian’s Palace, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. The palace is arguably the largest and most complete remains of a Roman palace in the world. A huge rectangular fortress facing the Adriatic Sea, the walls measure 705 feet long from east to west, and 594 feet wide.

As early as 229 BC, Romans established Solin (Salona), 3 miles from Split, as the capital of the Roman colony of Dalmatia. Salona served as the capital ...

Trogir, World Heritage City

... built in the early 13th century. There was a lot of activity going on this morning, more than usual for a Sunday morning mass so I decided to stick around and find out what all the comotion was about. After a few minutes, a large crowd of young men and women entered the cathedral and were seated at the front. I am not familiar with the catholic rituals but I think it was confirmation or another ...

Phantom Cell Phone Ring

In the Republic of Croatia is the City Zadar, near the top of the Dalmation Coastline. There is lots of development and construction everywhere in Croatia. Currency is the Kuna. Just behind the City is the jagged scenery of the barren Dinara mountain range. Unfortunately not ALL buses run when they are scheduled. Beware you WILL be left stranded. We arrived to the Adriatic Sea to find stones and rock instead of soft golden beaches, ouch. Raved as ...

A visit to Trogir

... that she had made a mistake and had sold me tickets all the way to Ancona. The actual cost for all six of us on the overnight ferry including cabin accommodation and breakfast was just 1600 kuna, or about $360. Pretty good value I thought. When we returned home Jess and I met with Nikola our host and I paid him and okayed it with him to check out later in the day, as our ferry didn't leave until 7.30pm. He said it was fine and we could stay as late as we liked. Excellent.

Split!!

... looked like someone's house, I was a little dubious when I went through the gate that some Croatian would come out screaming at me, but thankfully I had the right place. The hostel seemed ok, there was a little kitchen and the room had air conditioning, which was a result. After a much needed shower I headed back into town, this time looking for the old part which used to be part of Diocletian's palace, the city is kind of built ...

Go Bananas in Split

... beautiful as Amalfi but it's still a bloody good beach. Unlike in Amalfi, the water isn't all crystal clear but is instead patchy. Clear and light blue in some spots but rocky in others where the sea turns dark. We had a really nice swim and then went for a stroll through the city. In actuality, Clint was really on the hunt for his first Croatian cheeseburger. So far the Maccas in Hong Kong is winning the best cheeseburger competition at the moment though ...

Spilt Up

... Autumn sun. It is one of those places where you can wander around and easily get lost, such is the design of narrow passages and alleyways and in one case an underground thoroughfare. It is fascinating and beautiful, much like myself. I also rubbed the big toe of Gregorius of Nin (a statue, not the man himself, otherwise he might find that a bit annoying), which will bring me good luck forever. Similar to the statue of Juliet in Verona, where you rub the right breast. Not ...
