Why is it still raining? We have become weather-watchers, examining radar and hourly forecasts, hoping for some glimpse of sun. There is the promise that by afternoon it will clear up, with no more rain for the rest of the week. Fingers crossed... Another lovely breakfast, including the incredible eggs that seem to be a staple of Italy. It helps that Lena cooks them perfectly. Then off to read and relax before ...

          • Rain, rain, go away! Woke up at 7:00 am to thunder and torrential rain. Oh, well, it's a lazy morning, and perfect for a massage (best $60 euro ever!). After a delicious lunch, it was time for our main reason for being here--our first cooking class with Franco.

We all dutifully assembled at 3 pm, dressed in our aprons (thanks, Leenie, for dressing me) and our "bibles" (cookbooks) in hand. One learns quickly: Franco's kitchen, Franco's rules. After ...

After a big day yesterday we did not venture far, especially as it was a public holiday.

In the afternoon we drove in to Greve in Chianti to see the Museo Vino, which was open in spite of the public holiday. What a find it was. We had only seen it in passing, and had not seen any advertising, so didn't know what to expect. It was located in a renovated wine cellar, ...

Next stop Radda in Chianti and the drive there through the Chianti countryside was sublime!!! The rolling hills lined with yellow and red vines and olive trees. It was like looking at natures own patchwork quilt. We found a park at the bottom of the village and went in search of the tourist office to get a map for tomorrow's hike. The tourist office though was closed, only opened from 10.30 to 12.30 nice work if you can get it!! So we went off for a stroll ...

As my time here winds down I need to make sure I experience as much as possible. I found some towns listed under the "day trips from Florence" section in my tour book and picked one to take up my Sunday afternoon - some wine tasting sounded fun. Chris and Gina wanted to come along so we met at the bus station and bought our tickets for Greve in Chianti. The journey would take a little over an hour and I was willing to risk taking the bus because I ...
