... move up on to the great volcanic saddle, which separates the main peak from its slightly lower partner, Mawenzi. It will probably take about seven hours to cover some 15 kilometres today, again ascending 1000 metres. Tonight’s destination, Kibo Hut, can be seen nestling on the shoulder of the main peak, at 4700 metres.

Again there are two paths that can be taken today. The left fork (western path) gradually gains height as it passes the ...

... like his pace was leisurely, we kept falling behind. At the market fish are piled high with salt to extract the water and then boiled in oil to preserve it. There was thick black smoke coming out of the open-air shelters. In places the smell was overwhelming, sort of fishy, sort of garbagish, salty, oily. We walked to the water and saw a variety of boats that are used for fishing. There are owners of boats and there are fishermen. They have agreements ...

... after arriving, the highlight at this camp is their home made brownies. I had one for pudding and have to admit they are good! As we entered a very welcoming cool evening we made our way to the bar. They had wood burners inside on which they heated water for the other speciality, Amarula Hot Chocolate, delicious. The talk wandered into ghost story territory and we made our excuses. Not long before there had been much talk about ...

... around the house. Slowly everyone came out to greet us, with Halima at the back. She was super shy and she didn't seem to know what to make of the whole event. She has a younger sister, Nasra, who is about 4 years old and a baby sister, Shakira, who is only 4 months. Halima will be 10 years old in April. I found out that Halima's father passed away years ago and her mother has since remarried. She now lives in Dar with her ...

... me to him. I spoke to him but he didn't understand me and left very quickly. I then realised that he was from HOLLAND! It was quite funny. Afterwards, I went to school and played games as the kids love it so much! I feel closer to people at school as they are my good friends! 06/10 - I filmed a deaf band that appeared that morning, it was so good and the kids were marching again. After the band, I went to class 5 & 6 and taught them English which was ...

Dar es Salaam in the late 1930s This was my first glimpse of Dar es Salaam... a vast rippling blue-black lagoon and all around the rim of the lagoon there were pale-yellow sandy beaches almost white, and breakers were running up on to the sand, and coconut palms with their little green leafy hats were growing on the beaches, and there were Casuarine trees, immensely tall and breathtakingly beautiful... And then ...

We are supposed to be digging a grave right now. Behind the hospital. Ah, but first I should introduce Emmanuel to you. Or rather, let him introduce himself. Emmanuel is a 22-year-old refugee from Burundi. His family fled the Interahamwe (Hutu militia) some years ago, escaping down Lake Tanganyika. His mother died on the journey. His father and his brother went missing, leaving only him and his sister to settle in Kigoma, in western Tanzania ...

... group of nations and has been very involved. Later met the leader of the opposition party CUF. this involved getting lost in the back streets of Dar and driving through the middle of a veg market which was an interesting experience. Evening was a reception at the High Commissioners residence with lots of drinks and nibbles. Pat thinks the role of the Foreign Office is simply to keep her supplied with gin and tonics in far away places. Had a few beers back at the hotel to relax.
