... the land area around the water shaped like a backward number 6. Within the area circled by the reef the water is as calm and shallow as a kiddie pool, which, combined with the great snorkeling around the reef and jetty, makes the beach a popular place for families and snorkelers alike.

We set up our mats and towels in the shadow of a palm tree by a picnic bench where the grass met the sand. It was a windy morning, but the wind made ...

... homemade cookies and kettle baked Maui onion chips. Yum! Then Kalona took us up another trail to the top of the waterfall (just an FYI, that girl can kick butt, she and John hauled our gear up and down the trails in saddlebags!) where we crossed OVER the top of the waterfall and then up a ten foot vertical rock wall and back over the stream that feeds the fall! In addition to being windy, it is also wetter than the leeward side where we are headed. The leeward side is dryer, hotter and sunnier. We drove until we got to Hanapepe where we got gas. When we got to Waimea (why-MAY-ya) we turned off at Waimea Canyon Drive ...

... last year, but this worked! Lots of big fish today, but the murky water made viewing difficult. Sunned for a bit to dry off, then walked the beach for a while. Phil swam again. Back home to relax and then started a walk on our shoreline but ran into Dennis, a guy Phil has been talking with, and we talked till it began to rain a bit, and then harder so we gave up on the walk. Later took the car and drove to Pau Hana for a couple of drinks before going ...
