Portugal!

... beach. We definitely had chosen the wrong day to surf here; tide going out, steep beach! Nevertheless, there are always other beaches and it was back up the coast to Fao, where Lym (Annabelle was a little chilly) once again donned his suit and out he went. Lo and behold, was up on the first wave, and the second, the third.... Following a meal of barbecued chicken risotto ...

... other than from the coach that took us on our tour. As we left Vigo heading north along a motorway, I realized how green everywhere was compared to when we went to Rojales and the South East of Spain last year. It reminded us both of the Lake District in Cumbria.

voy a vigo

Today I´m headed for Vigo on the Northwest coast. Madrid has been good although tiring. It rained yesterday so I spent the afternoon at the Prado Museum. After that I walked forever, took a few pictures and ate some ice cream. If you´re ever in Madrid I recomend the Museo del Jamon, ham and cheese sandwich + beer = 2euros.

... work shifts of between 12 and 16 hours per day. On our boat, since the responsibilities of each position vary considerably from one another, most of the crew are also trained in other areas. So, when guests are aboard and the Steward/ess’ are crazy busy, the deck hands can help in many of the areas to lighten their load, and when there are few guests aboard, but we just finished a crossing, then the Stewies will help out the deck crew ...

Vigo

Today our port of call was Vigo, Spain. It is in the Galicia region (northwest) and it is quite beautiful. It rains there a lot, but we had a beautiful sunny day. We had hired a guide to show us the area. The highlight of the day for me was going to a castle. It was amazing… both the building and the ...

... Mayday. In Spain and Portugal this is actually celebrated on May 1st, not on the nearest Monday to May 1st as it is in the UK. Valenca was busy with tourists, mainly Spanish, and all its shops were open for business. That may not be saying a lot, because although there were several hundred of them, nearly every one was selling towels and tablecloths, which are very cheap in Portugal. In fact some shops were selling ...

... south with Snow! The weather held out so we found a campsite to freshen up. So mostly this week we have been heading west trying to escape the rain which seems to follow us and visiting lots of towns along the way which all have there own very distinct identity. The next town, Vincent we visited was fiercely pro Basque. loads of ETA protest graffiti and banners, it was a nice town though and we luckily stumbled upon a spring parade. Then on to Burgos which seems ...

... is where people from Spain travel to buy towels (not sure why but they did have lots of towels for sale) and Em & Eric did get a set just to follow the tradition.  Tui was a much nicer place and the cathedral was lovely. On the way home we stopped in Baiona an old port city with a cool old fort.  We took the walk along the top of the walls (a 3 km walk).

Portugal - Viano Do Castelo

... by Monsieur Eiffel of tower fame. The marina is also by the old town. Lots of little shops and restaurants. It is almost as cheap to eat out as in. The town is dominated by a hill on which there is a handsome basilica. This aftrenoon we hope to take the funicular railway to go and see it. Tomorrow we head for Povoa De Varzim for a couple of days before proceeding on to Porto.
