The Rooster and the Needle.

Rarotonga, in the Cook Islands - my new favourite place in the entire world! I wonder if I'm going to say that about every new country I go to?

My arrival was less than ideal - it was 1.30am, belting it down with rain and I had no idea whether my hotel was expecting me. Thankfully, they were and I collapsed gratefully into bed. A dull crashing woke me at a more sensible time in the morning and I stumbled from my funky, split level room (kitchenette, bathroom and living area downstairs ...

Raratonga - rrrrather !!

We miss Raratonga in the same way Frank Lampard misses open goals. Every time we think of it. I mention this national humiliation only because we watched Fat Frank miss the proverbial cows **** with a cricket bat for the last and most important of his 148 attempts in a tiny hut 20 yards from the beach at 5am in the morning. And that was the only blackspot of our stay. If it hadn't been for our pre-planned meet-up with Cath (more later in the LA section), we would probably still be there. Malc...

... blossoms for the hair. Dancers entertained on a grass lawn in the centre, wearing spectacular head dresses of green woven leaves and vibrant blossoms. We had no camera with us, and not much time- we had to find food! Remembering Tonga, where the market was the only source of fresh produce, we knew that if we didn't pick up anything now, we might be living on tinned tuna for a week!

Eggs, onions, kumera... we soon had the rudimentary ingredients for an ...

Saturday was a non-entity of a day as we had to vacate our rooms/ beds by ten and we weren’t leaving until midnight. So again it was a case of chillaxing and then cooking a huge meal for 10 consisting of pasta and tomato pasta sauce all for 5 New Zealand Dollars each. Then we were on our way to LA.

... to attend a talk hosted by the assistant cruise director entitled 'Travelers Century Club', they have an official list of all the 173 countries in the world. Unfortunately the organization for these get togethers on this ship tends to be lacking, with the result that the person who had originally suggested the topic did not attend the meeting and those that did had little or no knowledge of what it is all about. The cruise ...

... see Gloria sitting on her porch across the way, now sporting a dirty white construction hard-hat. Every once in a while, she came over to our building to give some more orders, but we just didn't seem to hear any of them as they seemed to be spoken in Fijian or Chinese...neither of which we understood. She would stare at us, pause, adjust her hard hat, and then stumble back to her porch and slump down in a plastic chair. It was sad, very sad. But I was glad as hell ...

My entry into the Vaka 106 Team Journal

JOURNAL ENTRY BY REBECCA "Q": Dear Readers of this Journal: Expect surprises - Debi told us. This was our first message of the day we received at the beginning of our term as "Vaka 106." Expect surprises....... Now my imagination is vivid and so I went off on my first day fully expecting something .. possibly something horrible or uncomfortable or unpleasant. But none of those words could adequately describe the types of ...

... all about the local marine life and dives. Remembering the wise words of Greg, the "Yoda of diving" I decided check out another shop before I booked. Snorkelling by the Rarotonga Beach Resort. Not the best conditions today we were told by another tourist on the beach. But we jumped in anyway. It was either that or scooter to Fruits of Rarotonga, but we'd been told that the water could be rough there. Once in there was plenty to see, the fish obviously ...
