Corozal Town, Corozal, Belize rambler... only to find out from a local guard that yes - there WILL BE bungalows, but no - NOT YET READY. When kindly asked when would they be ready the guard very kindly answered "if you come back in two years they should be ready, hmm.. better in three years" and wished us a really good evening... After day-to-day office stress it feels a bit awkward to encounter a place on Earth where time perception is so much different.

We started the ...
Corozal, Corozal, Belize tommnow... film. Tom jumped back on the canoe. It capsized again. He tried again. It capsized the other way. I continued to sink. Eventually, we both gave up and Tom joined me in trudging back to land through the waste-deep water. In the afternoon we went cycling around the bay. This was fun. There are a few interesting fishing villagees around the bay, and it's incredibly friendly. Everybody smiles and waves at you as you cycle past. The only problem ...
Corozal Town, Corozal, Belize sam180... found us a tarantula so in my hand it went - but not another first for Tommy.... We wandered the town that night - there are lots of Mennonites here - think of a cross between the Waltons & the Amish, dungarees, hats & in-breeding galore. To night we had the success of Tommy´s Chinese Restaurant and bizarrely found the Wizard of Oz on the tele. Breakfast at the local(greasy spoon) cafe & its the chicken bus back to Belize City
Orange Walk, Belize pilgrim143Drove a bit further inland to the town of Orange Walk, the second largest town in the country. It sounds as if it is big, but when you consider there are only around 280,000 people in the country as a whole you will realize it is quite small in reality with about 25,000 people. The town has a good mix of mainly wooden buildings, most are colourful shops. To get meat for example we went into the butchers which has two large chest freezers with only beef or ...
Orange Walk, Belize mikeandmary... turns with the bags and getting food. It dawns on us that no one seems to be paying for this food. It seems we have stumbled into a continental breakfast at the rather pricey resort. After food we greet the lady at the entrance to see if perhaps she wants to ask us for money. Nope. That's one we haven't done before. I guess it makes up for the expensive dinner! We bus again, several miles ...
Corozal Town, Belize azmarine... thought. Two bus rides later (Remember what I said about the right way? It wasn't.), we found ourselves in Cancun proper, where I surprised myself by actually recognizing stores on the way in, all of which but the large Chedraui supermarket were closed. They were still landmarks enough for us to find the ADO station with no trouble. We caught the first bus to Chetumal, which showed an inexplicably bad American movie about people carrying adventure ...
Corozal Town, Corozal, Belize wktsorf... an exit stamp. Some English tourists were stopped for not having a tourist card and were shafted out of 500 pesos US$50 which the border guard pocketed. This is normal practise and the only way around the corruption is to ask for a receipt if you are not too scared. We dealt with Belize customs easily and declared 3 cigarettes and an orange. I hit my head for the second time this week (Mexicans are shorter than me). This time on a ...
Orange Walk, Belize inoursuitcase... had a day of discovery in Orange Walk. The place is the agricultural hub of Belize. It's a town of 8,000. And what do you think about in Belize when talking about agriculture? Mennonites! They are everywhere in their overalls, cowboy hats, bonnets, and 1800's era dresses. They are a bizarre sight. Talking to some locals, there is a great deal of respect for them because of what they do for Belize's agricultural economy. (They are good farmers ...
Orange Walk, Belize gbendeck... me in the direction of a cheaper hostel for my stubborn march)! I soon met Charlotte from charlottes web Internet cafe, when i asked for a recommendation for lunch she said simply come with me I´m on my way now. We were then joined by perry a jewish man from Miami looking to move down to Belize with his new costa rican wife and adopted daughter, interesting fellow, somehow by dinner we also picked up a lovely dutch? fellow aswell. In short the people here are good people. The ...
