The train ride to Takayama was good. Plenty of nice scenery, especially when we climbed higher into the alps. Still lots of snow/ice on the ground. We arrive into Takayama around 3pm and made our way to the hotel, which was a 5 minute walk. The weather is really nice so we get straight back out and walk the streets till dark.
The old streets in Takayama are really cool, with some business dating back over 250 years, and still going strong. Mainly selling Sake and Soy ...

Another feature of the trip was the numbr of tunnels under the mountains that we drove through, one tunnel was just short of 5ks long. Our room is lovely with tatami (rice straw) mats covering the floor, futons, a low table with Japanese teapot and cups and beautiful laid out kimono for us both. There is a moment of panic when we are unable to open our door - not wanting to break the lock, unable to speak to our hosts we finally manage to work ...

Takayama, a town in the heart of the Japanese alps

After moving on every couple of days, we decided to enjoy 5 nights in one spot. Takayama was a lovely little town with the river running through it and shrines galore amongst the cedar trees. The town is renowned for its carpentry and its Hida beef. Both are excellent!! The beef is usually cut very thinly so it melts in your mouth. ...

... a local bus up to the folk village which is a collection of traditional houses moved from the surrounding area to form a museum. We couldn't do it justice as the thick snow lying on the paths made it impossible to enter some of the wooden houses. We still learnt about the silkworm cottage industries and the local passion for doll collecting. For lunch we went to a local noodle bar to fortify us for a walk around the ...
