The 2:30 hrs train ride from Nagoya to Takayama was very scenic. I really got a bit homesick on this train ride. Takayama is a small town close to the Japanes mountains also called Japanese Alps. The town has a beautiful old town and many lovely temples (with awesome picture opportunities). I did two day trips, one on top of a mountain with a cable car and another one ...

... miso, fish and raw egg. I don't feel like I missed much to be honest. In Takayama we visited a folk village with examples of all kinds of different traditional houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The biggest thing that struck me was how smoky everywhere smelt. ... were allowed a short stool to sit on, but then the food was below knee level. A small fish was served, intact, and a bit messy to manage with chop sticks but we all managed one way or another. Various Japanese condiments and the required rice bowl, of course. A miso topping was heated on a small brazier to be added the rice. More an experience than a delight, but not every meal will suit everyone. After lunch we were given an hour to walk ...

... history of road vehicle in Japan, part pop culture through out the years. Music, cameras, bicycles, TV's, and clothing. I made my way back to Nagoya station. It turned out that the train I needed to catch back to Gero didn't come for another hour. 6:00 pm was the last shuttle bus from Gero Station to the Gero Onsen Yunoshimakan. That train takes one hour, 50 minutes. It was 4:30 pm It's a 20 minute walk, but it's very steep. This was my ...
