Kurashiki and Onomichi: Rainy day Plan B
... featured the Buddhist 'Hear no evil, see not evil, speak no evil' mantra in sculpture form.
The highlight of the walk though is getting up to Senkoji park, where you can go to the observation tower and get a real view of the bay and of the island in the inland. Shrouded in fog, each mountainous island overlaps another, such that they look like a long mountain range, not individual islands. If only the rain had stopped, ...
Japan, Day 2, Storming the Castle!

We ...
The Year That Thanksgiving Happened Twice
My (US) foodie friends and I bemoaned the fact that we probably wouldn't be able to partake in our feasting day in Japan, due to a lack of supplies (re: turkey) and cooking methods (re: ovens). My predecessor had told me stories about past Thanksgivings in my apartment; too much food and too little storage space, leftovers for everyone, the kitchen being colder than the refrigerator (thanks Japanese winter). I had little to look forward to but the last one. I ...
