Happy One Week anniversary to US!!!!

Our last day before heading to Bocas Town to hook up with Gregorio at the house we're renting near Salt Creek on the other side of Bastimentos.

In between trying to escape the rain and the army ants, we decided to go to the local Ngobe restaurant and school to get to know the culture a bit more and pick up some goodies. There is a small thatched roof hut on water’s edge filled with two long tables and chairs made out of tree trunks. Think tree stump with a back. They were beautif...

A little Goose

Our stay at La Loma on Isla Bastimentos couldn't have been better. It was absolutely mind blowing. We got to the area via a small puddle jumper plane with about a 45 minute ride from Panama City. The airport is located in a small hippy/boaters community called Bocas Town. It's very friendly to "Greengos" and we were met by the smiling face of Kelly, a man who lives next to the Lodge and helps them with pretty much everything. It was about a 20-30 minute boat ride from the airport to the Lodge...

Moms most surprising aspect of this trip: How well I've communicated in spanish. (hmmmm....?)

What Mom looks forward to most upon returning home: not living out of a suitcase

What I look forward to most next: finding a nice place to settle for a while in Colombia or Ecuador and finally really learning spanish!

No power, but a starfish

... beer and then anchored offshore while we explored the coastline. We came across a starfish about 8 inches across and I thought that Mel's head might explode from sheer excitement! ;) We both picked it up and spent some time with it before putting it back into the water. Unfortunately, the water was quite cloudy from recent storms and the snorkeling was less than spectacular. Using borrowed equipment from the house probably didn't help, as my mask was ...

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica ... Day 6

The clouds covered the sky yet it was still beautiful at 5:30 a.m. The tropical awe that has a nice, humid and calming effect. I walked around to see if I could get any pictures of the birds who were very active. I didn't have any luck but sure did enjoy the music they produced. I made breakfast which consisted of ham omelets, toast and orange juice. I was a bit leery about the eggs as they do not refrigerate them. I then realized the eggs were ...

Easter at Bocas del Toro

... was HOT. Humidity is pretty high and sun is strong. Stopped in town at Chinese market (everything else was closed for Easter) and not more than 15 min upon arrival at Bocas Beach House (Dos Suenas) we were across the street in the water. Water here is warm like bath water. spent about 2 hours outside then flagged down a cab to take us to La Coralina (www.lacoralina.com) where we watched the sunset (or atleast the reflection in the clouds since we were facing ...

New Years with a Caribbean Flavour

... island. But we were in so enjoyment must prevail. The islands had been struck by horrendous flooding in the weeks leading up to New Year. Houses and restaurant had been blown away and rubbish was everywhere. It made for interesting time on the island. In particularly the walk across the island to the beach was a quagmire of Glastonbury proportions. Wizard Beach is notoriously dangerous and we were on the beach with the girlfriend of a Belgium guy who nearly drowned in ...

Bocas Del Toro, very unfortunate events.

... find some sort of comfort in knowing exactly what happened, we'll try to recount anything, if you have any questions, feel free to ask... We'll start with how we came to meet Joey. Kevin, my boyfriend, was riding a bus from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez to meet me. i believe Joey got on the bus at San Isidro, they met eyes and when the bus stopped in Puerto Jimenez chatted breifly and realized they were heading to the same hostel, which is where I was staying. We ...

Wonderful & Wild Bocas del Toro

... used to be called the "wreck deck" as it is set around a little pool with an illumimated wreck below and also has a large deck area right on the seafront so you can sit with your drinks and feet in the water ... all very pleasant indeed. However , after three nights of Bocas town nightlife I decided I really ought to escape in order to preserve both my liver and my sanity -so I decided to head for the tranquility of the Chiquiri ...
