... loop went through the Jumbo Rocks campground, and I met a guy who was filming people and asking why they were in Joshua Tree for Thanksgiving. So I stopped to talk. ... Coachella Valley to the west. I could see the San Andreas fault, Palm Springs, and the Salton Sea (a big shallow lake at the southern end of the valley, and 226 feet below sea level). Unfortunately it was getting late in the day, which meant the good view was looking directly into the sun and not very good. I made a note to try and come back here in the morning.

Around this time swarms of mosquitoes had decided that we were the only warm blooded creatures for miles around and started feasting upon us with gusto. We high tailed it out of there, but not before rescuing a pair of lost souls from orange county who had been wondering around in circles....

... Park as the destination. Many miles of bleak desert landscape follow, with the temperature hovering between 106 and 107. We finally arrive at the town of 29 Palms, which is the southwestern entry point to the park (29 Palms sounds lush and lavish, but those 29 trees appear to be the only greenery in the whole city).

Initial impressions of the park are not that great....still hot and more of the same desert. But we gain ...

... I explained where we camped for the night and how some of the roads were under construction below. This National Park is located in the Colorado Desert (the eastern part of the park below 3,000 feet above sea level). Tortoises are found here but they are declining because it takes the young over five years to grow a hard shell and coyotes and ravens are killing them. There are Ravens in the park because tourists are leaving trash ...
