After a sumptuous breakfast at the amazing Hostel Mostel, I went back to our room to pack, leaving Squirt to play on the computer in the main hostel common area. The computers were about eight feet from the manned reception desk and the hostel feels a very safe place, and it was good for Squirt to be able to spend a half an hour without me after …

Two flights on the excellent regional carrier Aegean Airlines brought me from the snow of Warsaw to seaside Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city. I came the region of Thessaly to visit the cliffhanging Greek Orthodox monasteries of Meteora and begin to explore sites holy to eastern orthodox Christians. Ideally I would have liked to go to Mt. Athos, where the monasteries are considered the holiest in Orthodox tradition. Logistics precluded this, but Meteora provided ...

Up early and walk the 2.5ks to the train that departs at 8.15am. Just as i arrive at the station it starts to rain heavily. This train back into Thessaloniki is an old diesel electric, and it shakes and rattles for the next 3.5 hours.

Arriving in Thessaloniki the weather is fine and almost warm. It is blus sky and must be around 17 to ...

We finished off our day with some ouzo and olives at a bar in Aristotelous Square. It turns out that Cort does not like ouzo... But at least she tried it! I'm very excited to be in Athens in the morning and to take a nap! It's going to be a long night on this train... But that's part of the ...

Did a drive by of the Mt Olympos area, but due to the weather didnt attempt any hikes. Then took a massive detour up further north to Thessaloniki, but the place looked so crowded we wimped out on stopping. Eventually deciding after all that to visit Meteora back south near where we started the day. If only we had been more decisive in the morning on our days journey as ...
