Lovely lodges and really helpful staff. Breakfast comes in a basket to cook yourself which is fab. Laundry is wonderful!

Good sized villas and comfortable with reasonable facilities. Located outside town and on the highway so get a villa away from the road.

When we arrived at Franz Josef it was a bright sunny warm afternoon we enjoyed a glass on our own patio! We had made enquiries about getting to the glacier at the tourist office where we were told it was a 45 minute walk from the car park on uneven ground. Our next option was a helicopter trip up there, weather conditions however were not with us!< …

Up early at 6am as shuttle bus was picking us up at 7.30am the busiest we have ever seen a breakfast buffet at 7am but to be fair we have never seen a breakfast buffet at that time!! The shuttle bus was only 8 people with a trailer for the suitcases. The railway station only has one line so could not get on the wrong train!! You take your suitcases …

Next day we had a lay in as we were both tired. Then it was on to Franz Josef, our next stop. We called in at the Hertz office in Greymouth as there was a couple of things to sort out. The first to check that they did not charge us for this section of the rental and second, Steve did not like the Escort they had given me so wanted to change for …

It all started with a sneeze. Nat down. Suspected broken neck and paralysis. Only 8am. Still time enough for a quick morning stroll before we head down to Franz Joseph for a helicopter ride and glacier hike. Its only a couple hours south and only 10 minutes to the beach. Wrong. The path to the beach is covered in mud. Deep mud. Deep enough to …

The rain has stopped and the sun is shining - its a gorgeous morning for our trip onto the Franz Josef Glacier.

After getting kitted out in all the gear, waterproof trousers, walking boots, hats, gloves, etc we are off in the helicopter for a short flight onto the glacier. Charlie and Indie in the front, and the rest of us in the back. …
