... were ready for it and it actually made the forest appear even more lush than usual. We saw some howler monkeys, a couple of tarantulas, and interesting flora that North Americans pay a pretty penny for back home (Birds of Paradise). Our guide was very knowledgeable and unlike our guide in Nicaragua, he didn't end every story about seeing animals with "...then we ate it" or "...then we killed it and ate it." He also dispelled some ...

Rain, rain... go away

... camping in a field outside of the volcanos park where we could only hear the volcano. One peaceful morning a thunderous boom from the volcano caused me to throw my coffee into the air which according to Dom was far more fun to see than an old volcano.  We try to make the trip by memory but after a lengthy time of being totally rapt in the scenery we suddenly realize that we don't remember the road being this bad. One wrong turn landed us ...

Pura Vida Mate

Today we took off for La Fortuna at around 7AM. Four of us (Jess and Janelle- two recently engaged Americans, and Marcin- a fellow Canadian from Ontario) decided to go white water rafting. Levels 3 and 4! First of all the drive there was unbelievable! Hills, jungles, hairpin turns, waterfalls...absolutely amazing! The white water rafting was intense! About 3 hours of pure rafting. Very ...

Letting Go

... and our fear that people will not respect or understand our decision. And that's a lot harder to do. But we made a commitment to ourselves then and there to work on that. And we thank Eric and Howard for reminding us of that. At some point we realized that we needed to hurry up and go to the grocery store to meet our taxi, so we said our good-byes and hurried on. We returned with $12 worth of groceries ...

... DID YOU HEAR THAT BOB? TOUCAN!!!´etc. Another comic interaction with other tourists involved a trip to the post office in which we got stuck behind a group of middle-aged French folks who each wanted about 14 stamps but also wished to argue about the price etc. However as they spoke no Spanish, all arguing had to be done through their blond-ponytailed tour guide who was simultaneously fielding bilingual calls on his cellphone. In the middle of ...

Pretty much everyday was the same for me ...

But how will people know I was here?!

... language. The mother was very sweet and chatty, but we never did manage to get her name. Off to bed, where I insisted on sleeping with a light on, as we had to be up and down to the hotel by 7:45-8, and it was already almost 3. Besides the stars, I thought the neatest thing was that that beach was riddled with clutches of turtle eggs, which we'd tromped back and forth over without knowing a thing. In a couple of months, it will be swarming with baby turtles.
