... of pitch and epenthesis in Thai pronunciation. Language acquisition is a incredibly complicated process. I felt like I was dissecting a butterfly in science class. We peeled away layers of English to peek at what functioned underneath. We broke out the microscopes and watched verb tenses wriggle and squirm beneath our lens. And then we put this new understanding to use with lesson planning.

The next stage was to travel near the Ko Samui Airport for our first teaching ...

... skulle kreve 8 forskjellige busser, 2 båter og 24 timer... Så her er jeg. Panang. Taket lekker ...

... inches deep!) in case we grounded. Well, I'll be honest, I got Pete to drag me for most of it.

We got back and caught the rest of the day's sun. There were a lot of Thai people trying to peddle drinks and ice creams on the beach (as well as those blody frogs!!! Thought they were just up north!) This one guy walks past with ice creams, we advised him no thanks, and within seconds he was back saying "Nothing else you'd like". I said no thank you, before noticing what he ...

... were not looking good... The nurses at the hospital cleaned him and and the doctor gave us some medicine and sent us on our way, with strict instructions to keep the foot clean, dry and in the open air... So we went and found a place to stay in town (you never want to be at someone else's house when you're sick...) and set Tom up in bed... Every morning I would go down to the shops and buy a 5 litre bottle of ...

... what is needed after lying in the sun and the days have been spent really doing as little as possible, reading, playing pool, taking a wander into the town for dinner and chatting to a group of really cool Spanish people that were staying here. It's just paradise, I will be back in Thailand in the years to come because it truly is as magical as people say it is.

Day 5 - Chaweng

The morning of Day 5 was mostly spent asleep. Previously I had had only 3 hours sleep since we had been in Thailand, so you cant blame me for a cheeky 10 hour shut-eye. The Coconut Grove hotel we're staying in is on the beach in seperate little bungalows, and very inexpensive considering the location and how nice the place is. There's not a lot of people around, even though its coming to the end of low season. We chilled on the beach in the afternoon, and all went jet skiing ...

... my eyeballs with chopsticks, so I'll try to keep this light. The national response to AIDS in Thailand, in terms of preventative education, is something like Camus would expect- half-hearted and inadequate. It's a serious need in my own village, where there are plenty of health professionals interested and motivated to work with AIDS, but without the support from schools and government sources. When my counterpart, Tuum, asked me if I could help her design a ...

Hot Season for the Thai Government

... Isaan province. Cameras followed the PM around as he hob-knobbed with villagers, answered questions, and tried to help individuals solve their problems. "Yeah, but did he plant rice?" I asked. The villagers I asked this looked at me like I had just grown an arm out of my forehead. Actually, they look at me like that anytime I speak, so I'm not quite sure if they heard me. But they wouldn't have been impressed if he had. Apparently putting on the khakis and loafers is as far ...
