Hey Rasta! (Shanes thoughts)

So, we have weaved our way thourhg a seemingly endless number of different transport modes to the mid-trip resort stop in, or rather, outside of San Pedro, Belize. The place were at is called Costa Maya Reef Resort. Its a 20 minute boat ride here from San Pedro that the incoming waves from Hurricane Gustav made only slightly more eventful than it usually is. Outside of that Gustav has provided little but a topic for casual conversation. Costa Maya is filled with activities and as expected, fa...

Welcome to the Island!

... beans lady was the nicest lady I´ve come across in a while. As were the deck captain and all the people on the boat. As soon as we got off the boat, a jolly giant of a man said ¨Welcome to the Island!¨ Nobody´s ever actually said that to me before, so I was pretty stoked. It set a great vibe for our stay. The hostel we´d read about (Tina´s Backpacker´s) was right off the dock and looked sweeeet. It was a two story wooden house with wraparound porches (and ...

... zu der Ray und Shark Alley. Aha. Also wer haette das gedacht?! Am ...

... were doing.   When I got back to the bar.  I saw the couple sitting at the table next to where Tom and I had been sitting.  And then I thought, how can I give the camera back without it looking as though I have been peeking at their naughty photos.  I waited until they were looking the other way and then dropped the camera back on the chair where I had found it.  I think I got away with it.  Hopefully they got it back. Yesterday we went out on a ...

Belize Beach Time

... looking good as the seas are high outside the reef, but we´ll see. We just have to have griled lobster kebabs at the local grill joint. So I´m up at 5am & the dive boat leaves without much confidence - we eventually turn back after waves over the boat & an American throwing up at will - we do 3 lower profile dives at the Atoll so its OK in the end if ñot the big one. The others go by ferry to the bigger Island (Ambergis) & confirm we are in the right place ...

Snorkelling with Sharks & Manatees on the reef!!!

... back to this area of the reef. Still this primeval beast kept coming until it was about 1-2 meters away, Nik said after that it looked like it was going to kiss me as we both floated motionless just staring at each other... By now I am giving it my best Clint Eastwood make my day moo creature pose also known as quite scared look well that was enough it backed off quite rightly so as well. So into the gloom it turned and headed off leaving us all and especially me abit stunned ...

My cameras not waterproof!

... we hoped for. The island is about 2 miles long and has a barrier reef surrounding it. We take off on our snorkeling tour in the morning. So as for the rest of the week, there has been lots of hammocks, reading, drinking the local 1 barrel rum and swimming at the "split" which is a broken wall at the end of the island that for some reason everyone lays out on :) The people here are on island time (plus or minus a ...

... dealt with the situation several times before. They even tried to get Dianni's number for me, but didn't have it. I was able to book a room for 4 nights with Dianni's after looking up the number in a phonebook. Now that our trip to Placencia was all set up, we decided to grab a small meal. We settled on pizza at Rose's cafe since we figured we could have some that night and then save some for the next morning using the fridge ...

We´d met a really great Aussie guy called Tristan, who´d kindly offered to lend me his water proof camera so that I could swim out to the sand bank with Charlotte and Rodolfo and take some photos. I tell you something, I´ve never been as proud as the moment after I´d swam all the way out to find my incredibly talented ...
