Belize - Island Trip

We had a lot of fun on this trip! After landing in Belize City, we took a little puddle jumper plane over to Ambergris Caye, the largest island off the coast of Belize. The mode of transportation there is golf cart and bicycles. Our condo doors opened onto the sandy beach and crystal clear water.

Welcome to the Island!

... Poor thing. I convinced him to go to Belize that day in spite of it, since we had already bought our tickets for the Gringomobile, and he hates travel days anyways. So he might as well just have one really terrible day and end up at the beach tmrw, right? Right. I knew you would see my logic. Come to Nurse Susan, baby. I drugged him (and plugged him) up with Dramamine and Immodium, gave him 7/8 of the seat as penance for making him take the bus, and we ...

Caye Caulker

... he agreed to give them to me only when I could tell him what colour the dirty underpants that I had packed at the top of my bag were withouth looking. We're only in Amgergris Caye for two nights and, looking round the town, two nights is plenty.  It's ok here, but it's the kind of seaside resort that you'd find anywhere in the Caribbean.  Except that it's full of Americans. On our first night, becuase we were by the Caribbean, we decided to ...

Snorkelling with Sharks & Manatees on the reef!!!

... and ocean scene is just staggering added greatly by indigenous ladies in bright coloured dress wandering along the beach at ease with all their wears balanced on their heads, how do they do that?!! Then it was back to work and our next stop where we had the remote chance of seeing Manatees - the sea cow. Diving in our captain pointed us in the rough direction we might see them and off we all went. Looking in every direction into the gloom neither Nik nor I saw any cow ...

... able to swim through canyons of coral there and see a great deal of reef life including many lobsters. When we returned, we paid and picked out BDS t-shirts which were complementary with 3 paid dives. We rinsed our gear and then left it to dry for the afternoon. After showering, we tried to go to Don Corleone's for a late pasta lunch, but they were closed in between their lunch and dinner hours. We walked to Syd's, which is ...

Belize - Caye Calker

... were your genuine African Caribbean looking Rastafarian's with thick Jamaican accents, coupled with the expected laid back attitude and demeanour towards others. In fact the general pace of life here was so laid back and slow, that you felt guilty every time you hurried from the hot beach sand to the nearest bar to "re-hydrate". Actually, Charlotte and I got told off on two occasions in the beginning for walking to briskly around the island. Both times it involved a group of ...

Sharks!

... we came for, was fantastic. To get out across the reef, we were rocking through awful waves, but the visibility and the depth were incredible (we went down to 90feet!! 50 feet farther than before!), and we saw some amazing colourful creatures. On the second dive, John's stomach decided that it did not appreciate the 20 foot waves, and chose to stay behind... Honestly, I don't blame him, and if I had not spent numerous weekends on boats off the west coast of BC in weather no one should ...

Island Charm

... ceviche. Afterwards, I wandered around San Pedro, which is the big city in Caye Ambergris. The streets were busier and there were actual cars and motorized vehicles on the island. In fact there were paved roads; of which Caye Caulker had none. There were many tourist shops as well. I can see why this was more popular. This was the North American Caye. More for tourists and honeymooners than those that really wanted the island spirit. Caye Caulker was a little more destitute ...
