The sounds and smells of Sulmona really stick out for me, and in a really positive way. When I first arrived in my hotel room, absolutely beat and jet-lagged from the trip, the sounds were comforting: animal noises (dogs barking, roosters crowing, etc.), the strains of the star-spangled banner on electric guitar (imitating Hendrix), all muted, in the distance. The smell of the wood-burning stoves coming from the chimneys around town was almost intoxicating.
