01 - Landing on Deception Island
Deception Island is an active volcano, flooded with sea water (a calderra). The beaches steam...as you can see in this photo, capturing fellow passengers walking along the beach toward the ruins of a now protected whaling station. The Antarctic treaty protects these ruins, along with the rusting whale blubber tanks as a memorial to the past activities of the whaling fleets here
