11 - Drinking Chicha with the Achuar - Amazon, Ecuador

11 - Drinking Chicha with the Achuar, Amazon, Ecuador
The beer is made by old women who chew (gum?) manioc roots and then spit them into an open jug to ferment for two days. It is served by the women in an open bowl. Before it was handed to me, the young lady used her fingers to remove a couple of insects who had drowned. I tried not to consider the question of whether the Achuars had adopted the western custom of toilet paper.
