Okay, so I gave the Henkster a hard time over his photographic abilities in my entry from Beijing but I have to tip my hat to him here. This is a lovely picture he captured on the streets of Hohhot as fireworks to mark the end the 2-week celebrations for the Chinese New Year were going off all around us. And I mean literally all around us. It was an astonishing scene on the streets that evening. It was like a war zone. I've never witnessed anything like it and I admit at times it was a bit scary. People were letting of masses of massive fireworks on every street and every street corner. The noise was deafening. Hundreds of thousands of people were standing around and enjoying the scenes. I've only ever seen a fireworks display from a predetermined safe distance but these displays were within feet of spectators as you can see from this picture. The fireworks in this particular display just about cleared the tops of the buildings before exploding. I managed to get a few good, Travelpod worthy, pictures myself but the top prize on this occasion goes to this Henkster picture. Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, Northern eastern China. February 12th 2006
