As the plane flew over San Francisco bay, these amazingly shaped and coloured lakes appeared. I first I thought it might be some horrible chemical spill disaster, but after a bit of web research I found out that these are salt lakes and that 'the high-salinity ponds turn dark red due to thriving halophilic bacteria producing a red pigment.' Very pretty though.
