Following the route taken by John Bellows in the winter of 1863
About this blog
In February 1863 my great-grandfather John Bellows travelled from Gloucester to the Southern Norway port of Arendal, allegedly to visit his sick fiancée.
Travelling in the dead of winter in those days was pretty hazardous, but he made it and subsequently wrote a book entitled "A Winter Journey from Gloucester to Norway". (This was before he wrote such literary gems as "A week's Holiday in the Forest of Dean" and the wonderfully-titled "Remarks on certain anonymous articles designed to render Queen Victoria unpopular"). The book is tantalising because although it is a marvel of descriptive writing, certain important facts are omitted, so I decided to put in some detective-work to find out why he REALLY made the journey
