About this blog

Bangkok. The City of Angels they say (and Siam Ocean World would say the City of Angles...see pics in the entry). It's a city full of paradox. Opulence and destitution coexist peacefully on age old streets. In an instant a visitor can realize why it is the capital of the Land of Smiles - a friendly stranger blithely offers help to a couple of lost young tourists on the street - then just as quickly feel the bitter sting of prejudice aimed against foreigners in the refusal of service or an attempt at low budget fraud. It's a place where the pristine natural beauty created by a lush river delta is slowly choked to death by the pollution of a growing metropolis. The city is at once bustling with activity, growth, globalization and 21st century business, yet shockingly lonely to the beggars whose deformities result from disease-ridden squalid living conditions. Shrines to the Buddha dot the city, almost as obiquitous as 7-11 stores.Bangkok is a fusion of old world and new age. The city has a pulse. It's both living and dying. You can feel her breathe as you zip along the skytrain. You can watch her fall asleep when the sun sets behind the Golden Temple.

Looking back on the trip I realized how fitting a place Bangkok was to ring in a new year and a new decade. In the week we found both satisfaction and disappointment, elation and frustration, anxiety and peace. It was the perfect analogy to what the year ahead may bring. We came out the week wiser and happier. Here's to hoping we will end the year on the same note...
