Terry and Claudia's First Trip to Britain - 2012
About this blog
This is the story of our 25 day trip to England in the Spring of 2012, our first time visiting the United Kingdom. We traveled with our friends Roy and Karen who had been to England before and who helped us plan this trip. We went our separate ways during the middle week, while Roy and Karen journeyed to Scotland and back, but for the rest of our trip they were marvelously helpful in getting us oriented as well as being great companions.
We focused on seeing popular destinations (including Bath, Oxford and London) and some important places where our ancestors lived. We stayed in six different Bed and Breakfasts and rented a flat in Chelsea, London for a week during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
All in all everything went smoothly. The trip entailed twelve different train changes to get to all the places we wanted to see. We also used local public buses, and a couple of tour buses to get around to various sites and villages. We did an awful lot of walking: approximately 80 miles, and had the sore feet to prove it. We experienced all kinds of weather, from freezing sleet and hail to +28C degree heat. We ate mostly in local pubs and tasted lots of different ales though out the many areas we visited.
We met lots of friendly people and CAMRA members (both Terry and Roy belong to the "CAMpaign for Real Ale" organization in Canada), and were helped in our genealogy quests by some very nice people in the village of Staplehurst, Kent. Many thanks to Alan Compton, a distant cousin of Claudia's who we met for the first time in Salisbury. He took this photo of us in the lovely riverside garden of a pub near Great Wishford, Wiltshire.
The crowds were huge in London for the Queen's jubilee celebrations, with people visiting from all over the world, judging by the many different languages we heard on the streets. Although we only caught a distant glimpse of the Queen and Prince Philip during the flotilla on the Thames, these royal celebrations were a once in a lifetime experience, and we're so glad we went at this time.
We now have lots of great memories to cherish forever, and we want to share some of them you here. We both took lots of photos and Terry kept a daily journal of the highlights of the trip.
