Route 66: Back On the Great Old Road

About this blog

How many great roads--and road stories--do we have in the U.S.? They're innumerable. But Route 66 seems to be a draw and for many, many reasons. You can choose your own reason as to why, but for us, it's a way to re-connect to what's real, what's true and what's great about our country.

In May of 1993, I drove the whole thing by myself from Chicago and back. I did this trip with my Dad in May of 2009. While driving through Illinois, it brought back some childhood memories of 66, bouncing around in the back seat of our 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88, driving to my Mother's parents and relatives in Alton, Illinois. This time I was the navigator and Dad drove ALL the way out at the age of 87, enjoying every minute of it. For him it was a kind of road homecoming, as he and Mom drove it before I was born, when it was a real highway in 1954.

On this latest trip we drove through sunshine, fog, rain, experienced temperature fluctuations of 60 degrees, went from sea level to 9,000 feet, saw scenery that was beyond breathtaking and met people from four foreign countries that came here JUST to do what we were doing...driving America's Main Street. You'll get to see most of this in the pictures and videos we've posted. The entries you'll read are the email dispatches we sent as we made our way west, then back east by way of three National Parks. (We must also confess we cheated coming back. We drove the Interstate much of the way. Boring.)

There's always room for one more story from the road. We've posted several here. In fact, there's always room for one more traveler. Come along for the ride!
