Belém do Pará and Marajó island - my 1st time in the north of Brazil.
About this blog
Thanks to the mileage program of Varig I was able to issue two return tickets to Belém paying only the airport taxes. I decided to invite my mother to travel with me and visit the Amazon for the first time. Belém is not only a historical place, but also the 'gate' to the Amazon region. I was surprised with the richness of their culture; their festive traditions are really fantastic. We were lucky to be there in June and witness their "Festa Junina" with a series of fabulous presentations of groups performing a traditional dance: 'quadrilha'. They were extremely well rehearsed and beautifully dressed. We also saw a few presentations of Carimbó - a typical dance from Pará. Tasting the local dishes and the unique ice creams they produce was also very special. Belém is definitely a must see in Brazil!
