About this blog

We are off to Norway to discover our roots. We leave Calgary on July 7 and return on July 31.

Linda and Avis are third cousins who share Norwegian great, great grandparents, Aaron and Anne Christine Anderson. Their son, Lawrence, had a daughter named Annette who was Avis' grandmother. Aaron and Anne's daughter, Anna, married Ole O. Steen and their son, Arnold, was Linda's grandfather.

There are several other family connections in Norway we want to expore. Linda's great, great, great grandfather, Jon Kalbaekken, was the first settler in an area of Norway 200 miles north of the Arctic circle called Bardu. He arrived in that area in 1791 and the house he built that year is still standing, a well preserved historical site.

Our journey through Norway will be by rental car and the Hurtigruten coastal ferry. We plan to explore churches, graveyards, farms, historical sites, and museums in towns, villages and cities to find out about our ancestors and experience the beautiful Norwegian landscapes.

Prior to landing in Oslo we will be spending 5 days in London, UK. We will see some sites, take a tour of Canterbury and area, attend a theatre production and recover from our jet lag before flying to Oslo on July 13.
