Trapped in Turkey : A Good Trip Gone Wrong
About this blog
On Thanksgiving Day, 2004, my friend Ruby called me and asked if I wanted to go to Turkey. Of course, I said yes. For a year, I had heard about this trip; every spring, twelve people from Durango rent a ninety foot Turkish gulet and sail the Turkish coast. This year, one of the regulars couldn't make it, and I got the call. I could hardly wait. Sign me up! I was so excited. The problem with Turkey was that it wouldn't turn out to be Turkey . It's like that old joke about the mythical Mick Jagger not being the real Mick Jagger when you finally meet him. The problem was the promise of this trip, and the expectations I had for it. Trips are like relationships: you can get in real trouble if you put them on a pedestal at the outset.
