So much to say about Guatemala! The people I encountered were humble despite widespread governmental corruption and exploitation. The GRAND site of the Maya, this country is rich in history!!

About this blog

Guatemala is a place that is rich in history! Although the Maya are not part of the Guetamalan curriculum, they are an integral part of what has shaped Tikal and Northeastern Guatemala. I have experienced only the tip of the iceberg of what is Guatemalan governmental corruption and it left a sour taste in my mouth. However, the people here remain entirely optimistic for the future. Just 20 years ago Guatemala experienced a violent revolution which was supposed to end the rule of brutal militaristic dictatorships. The promise of democracy still has not come to fruition. Guatemalan farmers account for 80 percent of the people yet own only 5 percent of the land. All that aside, Guatemala is a BEAUTIFUL country with much ecological diversity!
