About this blog

Escaping the winter cold and Spring Festival chaos of China to experience the life and culture of 2 very diverse hidden gems of Indochina - Laos and Cambodia- that I have always wanted to visit. Bring on the hot weather and new I begin a stunning journey through the quiet heart of Indochina.

Laos, officially known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), is one of the poorest nations in SE Asia. A mountainous and landlocked country, Laos shares borders with Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, Thailand to the west, and Myanmar and China to the north. First created as an entity in 1353, when warlord Fa Ngum declared himself the king of Lane Xang - the land of a million elephants (only about 2000 remain today). Here Buddhism permeates every facet of life, change comes slowly, and cities bed down early. In fact it is often referred to as Lao PDR - Please Don't Rush which fits the country perfectly. Open your heart, open your mind, and let the genuine faith and generous hospitality of Laos replenish your soul. It worked for me!

Cambodia offers the best of all worlds: breathtaking monuments of the past unfold before your eyes, unspoiled nature is everywhere you turn, and you can experience everything from pampered elegance to the simplicity of local life. After about 35 years of non-stop war, this beautiful country is finally re-emerging from the darkness. Since the time of the Vietnam War in the sixties, Cambodia has had to suffer "secret" carpet bombings by the United States, followed by the reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge, a Vietnamese takeover, and a further 20 years of civil war. Following U.N. peacekeeping efforts, and the dismantling of the Khmer Rouge, the country is now enjoying a period of stability and new-found optimism. Its many wonders are now open to visitors to see and explore.

I've only managed a glimpse of what these countries have to offer and hope you enjoy reading my blog as much as I enjoyed these beautiful countries. Definitely intend to return......
