About this blog

Ever wonder what a first trip to China might be like?

With visits to Beijing, the Great Wall and Xi'an, we had exposure to China's history and archaeology contrasted with the developing parts of China by visiting Shanghai.

Come see with us some of the naturally beautiful scenery and geological formations of China: The mountains and lakes of Huanglong National Preserve & Jiuzhai Valley National Park, the limestone karsts & rural countryside of Yangshuo, and the sea of clouds and mountains of Huangshan Mountain.

We were hopeful for encounters with local people and general people-watching. Harvey had been studying Mandarin for a year and with the help of our guides, we were able to have some communication other than a passing smile.

We went with open minds and hearts, a sense of humor and flexibility and each day was another happening. Now that we are back home, we often are asked "so how was your trip?" Both of us will have this blank stare on our face or offer only silence on the phone. This is initially interpreted as a negative. This is far from that.

It is that a sound bite or even a few sentences can't even begin to capture the impressions and experiences of being in China.

To fill out this response, a personal anecdotal description of our experience follows. We hope you enjoy the journey along with us!
