Journalism gave me a lot and one gem from the precious memory chest is my trip to Israel to cover the historic peace-innitiating effort of Egypt's president Anwar el Sadat to Jerusalem. Most memorable
About this blog
Somehow I persuaded my editors I will be in Tel Aviv on time to cover Sadat's arrival there. The shockingly courageous decision to visit, on his own initiative, Israel, the arch rival of the Arab world, was announced late and the media of the world sprung to action. Sadat's statement "For peace I will travel to Hell if needed", was grasped by Tito as "must cover event". My next concern was how shall I get into the Jewish state. No visa. No cash. Plastics only. It was late November 5th, I was in Skopje. Sadat was expected on Ben Gurion Airport 18:00 local time November 7th. The Israeli embassy in AThens issued me a gratis visa by noon the next day, November 6th. I was an ElAl flight November 7th at 14:30. The rest, you know, is history.
