This was the last of my many visits to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Soon after Yugoslavia fell apart while Bosnia was neck-deep in a fratricidal war along ethnic, religious and ideological divides. Horrible.

Bosnia and Hercegovina was "the darling" of Yugoslavia, its soul and heart. The brain was elsewhere. These great people never cared: they themselves invented these jokes about them being proverbially dumb backward or simple. The jokes about Mujo and Haso. My first six months of army duty passed in Kiseljak, a spa near Sarajevo. When we went out the civilians looked at us as if we were semi-gods. We were a battalion of the air-force and our uniforms (light-blue shirts, ties, high-quality darker hue of bluish jackets, trousers and shiny, black, short boots) cought the eyes of the girls gone out for the Sunday dance. Traveled to Jajce, where modern Yugoslavia was formed, to Banja Luka, Drvar, Mostar, Sarajevo: remember the Winter Olympics? Sad
