A Glance around 'The Golden Land'
About this blog
Burma... Myanmar... it's been on my list for so long, and my internal debate on whether a visit meant supporting the regime or supporting the people flipped back and fore... yet everytime I've been in SouthEast Asia I've been in the "don't go" frame of mind, so missed it. At last I decided, in February this year, that I should go and booked the tickets, looking forward to finally visiting this least-visited of the S.E. Asian countries. In a month I would have time to really explore a little, get up north and do some long river trips with locals, as well as checking out the more obvious tourist destinations. It's amazing what can change in a few months... I got a job in Brunei to start on January 1st, cutting my Burma adventure to an 11-day whizz round the main sights... Aung San Suu Kyii was released prompting a wave of positive news about changes in Myanmar, and suddenly every Tom, Dick and Harry seemed to be going on a Burma trip... so not quite the tourist desert I had desired! I experienced far too little in far too short a time and thus met far too few local people, but it was nonetheless a fascinating glimpse of a land hopefully about to go through massive change...
