Nicaragua 2010/2011

About this blog

Three weeks in Nicaragua, the land of many volcanoes, lakes and canyons, jungle, beaches, colonial towns, many coffee plantations, music and very friendly people.

We also celebrated New Year's Eve and my birthday there! :-)

- Nicaragua has different climates, it's very hot near León and the beaches, it's cooler in the mountains. Bring enough thin layers of clothes to mix and adjust.

- Avoid dodgy Managua. There are Paxeos shuttle buses and taxis directly from Managua airport to Granada for around US$25-35 p/p.

- Buses are cheap, and it only takes a few hours to get from one interesting place to the next. But buses are always crammed full of people and it's hot. So be prepared. Hide valuables well and keep an eye on all your stuff at all times.

- In the cities, use taxis after about 8 or 9pm. Use *real* taxis only, they should have a red rim around their licence plate. Check and remember the number. Avoid cars without any licence plate at all!

- Don't flaunt valuables. Even though other tourists play with their iPads on outdoor terraces under the nose of homeless people, that doesn't mean it's safe (or respectful!!).

- If you can, learn Spanish! It makes travelling in Nicaragua much much easier and more fun. And it's a language you will enjoy and be able to use in many countries for the rest of your life.

- Talk with people, take your time to visit markets and sit on plazas and watch Nicaraguan life go by, wander around and discover nice little churches... Enjoy! :-)
