La Mercé is one of Barcelona's main festivals - a brilliant combination of traditional and modern. It lasts for four days, usually around 24th September, although the dates can be hard to pin down. It consists of hundreds of events, many of them free and outdoors. There is little chance that you'll see everything you want so you need to scour the programme and pick out a few highlights then fill in the gaps with anything else that sounds interesting.
