Bretzel, Benches and Bedbugs

About this blog

The idea of a gap-year backpacking through Europe came about when we were in the third grade. It was a time when tracksuit pants were widely accepted as the only essential item of clothing (only just more important than a scrunchy) - provided they came in an array of painfully bright colours. We were observing a game of kiss-catch when Raphaela asked Claudia: "Wouldn't it be cool to go on a gap-year backpacking through Europe?" "I guess," Claudia shrugged, sucking the last bit of her yoghurt off her finger (cutlery wasn't nearly as important as tracksuit pants).

This idea was met by eye-popping grinned "reeeaaally?"s from grown-ups for the next 8 years, akin to the reaction expected when declaring a wish to join the circus (Raphaela knows this for a fact - for years she fervently dreamed of becoming a tight-rope walker).

But ha! 8 years later, we might not be running off to join the circus (Raphaela doesn't have the hand-eye coordination and Claudia's afraid of elephants), but we are running off to Europe, armed only with one massive bag each, that still looks way too small for an entire years worth of clothing.

We'll be starting out in Austria for four months, gaining some serious muscle and money carrying plates to fund our wandering. From there we're taking a more close-your-eyes-and-stab-at-a-spot-on-the-map approach to traveling.

Will we find ourselves? Hard to say. Will we attempt to eat our way through Europe? Hells yeah. Will we have over-packed? Probably.

So peek in on our misadventures from time to time as we embark on a year of Bretzel, Benches and Bedbugs...
