Sally Thelen: “unbravely” exploring Asia

April 16, 2010

The unofficial definition of unbrave is:

“Doing things others might consider brave (living abroad, traveling alone, eating unpronounceable and possibly indigestible food items, eating those things while traveling alone even though there’s a very strong possibility you might keel over dead later and no one will be the wiser) while possessing only a passport, a sense of humor and an iron stomach.”

Sally Thelen

Sally Thelen

Sally Thelen created her blog, Unbravegirl.com after she moved to Japan three years ago to teach English at a university in Kobe.

She initially had a plan to share her tales and photos of Asian adventure with her friends and family back home.

Her “Asian adventures” frequently revolved around the food she was eating and how she could no longer fit into her pants due to that food.

She’d also provide useful information about life as an expat American woman living in Japan and traveling solo through Asia at the same time as writing long diatribes about her love for her couch.

Just recently, she left her Japanese life (and couch) and she’s now writing about life on the road, including food she’s eating on the road.

“My plans are to live one to three months in Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China,” Sally says.

“Because I’m a lazy saver and an even lazier travel planner, I’ll be doing the trip as rent- and guide-book-free as possible by house-sitting, volunteering, working odd jobs or teaching in each country I visit.”

That’s quite the challenge, and readers can follow along as she house-sits, cat-sits, kills ants and, generally, attempts to avoid death in a small village in the jungles of Northern Thailand.

Roni Weiss mixes travel with humour

April 16, 2010

It’s an interesting mix of humour and travel stories.

Roni Weiss’ blog, roniweiss.wordpress.com is really funny, he definitely looks at the world with a cheeky sense of humour.

He compiles funny stuff he finds throughout the web with stories about his travels around the world and his adventures in New York City.

Roni has been to six continents and more than 60 countries.

He’s currently teaching English in France and traveling around Europe.

I especially enjoyed his video blog featuring him enjoying fatty duck breast in Toulouse and his hilarious review of a “porn-ish” movie in Lyon.

The Junior League created the James Beard award-winning cookbook Savor the Moment and it is the inspiration for the online compendium of wine, food and travel reviews.

Borrowing inspiration from the movie “Julie and Julia”, Stephanie is cooking her way through all 255+ recipes in the cookbook.

As a Certified Specialist of Wine, she’s also providing winning wine pairings and entertaining advice as well.

“In addition to my cookbook project, I also love to travel and blog regularly about my food & wine experiences from around the world,” Stephanie says.

“What better way to explore a new place?”

Be sure to check out her travel stories from the South Beach Wine and Food Festival and France.

The TripWow travel slideshow experience

April 14, 2010

Remember the days when your Great Aunt Agatha back from her trip, invited everyone over and gathered around the slide projector to show off your photos?

Snore. Boring right?

Your dad could never get the screen set up properly, a lot of times the slides would be out of order and the projector jammed in the middle of it.

Luckily, with digital cameras and the miracle of the internet, we don’t have to deal with that anymore.

Introducing: The TripWow slideshow experience.

Preview Lucky's TripWow experience

Anyone with a Flickr, Facebook, Picasa or TravelPod account can create one.

Import your photos from any of these accounts, add some music to match and magically, you’ve created very own, cinematic slideshow experience.

What’s Ivan Quintanilla’s traveling IQ?

April 14, 2010

He was born in Cuba, raised in Miami, educated in Dallas and London and now he’s a professional actor and travel writer living in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC.

“I believe every step out the front door is an opportunity to explore,” Ivan Quintanilla says.

Ivan Quintanilla

Ivan Quintanilla

He created Traveling IQ to help others find those opportunities.

“With every trip we take, we learn a little more about a place, a person, a culture and ourselves,” he says.

For two months he’s been posting travel content in a voice that is fun, informative and sometimes a little bit titillating.

He brings a unique urban experience to the travel blog-o-sphere.

“From faraway lands to our neighborhood streets,” Ivan continues, “let’s experience this big, small world and in the process expand our Traveling IQ.”

I loved his post on the Alcatraz Hotel in Germany and his ideas for tasting a trip instead of actually going for one are very cute.

Todd Wassel’s wanderings

April 14, 2010

As many travel bloggers do, Todd Wassel created his blog, Todd’s Wanderings as a way to share his life on the road, encourage others to travel and live abroad, and introduce readers to a unique lifestyle choice.

Todd left the USA at age 22 and 11 years later he is still living abroad.

Todd and Kay Wassel

Todd and Kay Wassel

“The site aims to show the ups and downs of life on the road, the amazing people and places we meet along the way, and the irreverent commentary that springs unbidden from my soul,” Todd says.

“Unlike so many others who dream of travel, our philosophy is just do it and figure out the logistics, and credit card payments, later.”

At first Todd was a teacher in Japan for five years and then he switched careers to conflict management and human rights.

This has kept him busy traveling around the world.

Todd’s work and play brings him to some offbeat places and he shares his unique perspective as a development worker.

Although he was once a solo-traveler, he’s now married to Kay, a lovely lady that he met in Timor-Leste during a peacekeeping mission.

She is now an integral part of Todd’s traveling plans, as she works in the same field and shares a love for countries in conflict areas.

Kay will soon begin sharing food recipes from our travels and her own mom’s Japanese homemade secrets.

Foodie roadtrips with Susan McKee

April 14, 2010

Her stepfather once told her that he’d only go to Italy if he could have a good American breakfast each morning.

Susan McKee quickly retorted, “Stay home!” and asked him: “Wouldn’t it be better to go to Italy and eat a good Italian breakfast?”

In the end, her mother and stepfather did go to Europe, and they ate local every day.

Susan believes that travelers who eat what the locals eat have a much better sense of place than those who expect an American breakfast wherever they go.

“Travelers need just a few necessities: method of transport, place to bed down…and food,” she says.

“Preferably wonderful food expressive of the time and place one’s visiting.”

Susan’s blog, Road Trips for Foodies previews opportunities to sample local cuisine while traveling.

She spotlights special events like food festivals and also reviews restaurants and other eateries around the world.

Food, of course, also includes wine, beer and spirits, so those aspects of sustenance aren’t slighted in the least.

Find info on beer events, wine tastings and spirit sippings on her incredibly thorough blog.

Adventures with Robert Fitzsimmons

April 13, 2010

He started his blog AdventureRob, just over a year ago, and recently celebrated his first year of travel anniversary on that blog.

Bryan Cassidy’s Tourfolio

April 13, 2010

He created Tourfolio.com back in September, as a personal travel blog to capture his personal travel stories and photographs to show family and friends.

Since then, Bryan’s blog has grown and transformed into an interactive travel blog with hysterical travel stories, helpful travel tips, useful travel gear reviews and interesting interviews.

I thought he had some helpful tips for planning a heli-skiing vacation and in case you need something to do with that extra cash, there’s an article about spending $15,000 in 72 hours at Disney World.

“The more you travel, the more you realize how little you’ve seen,” Bryan says.

He’s a full fledged travel addict sharing his ideas and tips with others who share his obsession, check him out before he’s off on another adventure again.
