Camden Luxford living it up in Peru

March 24, 2010

She says her blog isn’t about a whole lot of actual travel, but I’ve got to believe otherwise.

Camden Luxford has been and lived just about everywhere, so anything she writes must be about travel.

Camden Luxford

Camden Luxford

The Brink of Something Else is about pushing into the unknown, living, working, studying and exploring in a new country.

“Mostly it’s about the fact that I’m terrified of real life, and most comfortable when I’m completely out of my comfort zone,” she says.

Her blog is about learning new languages, trying new foods, meeting new people, deciphering the politics, economics, culture and slang.

Cam veers wildly between entertaining anecdotes about her daily life in Cuzco, Peru and actual, you know, information.

Earl Baron wanders the earth

March 23, 2010

More than ten years ago, he set out on a three month backpacking trip that still hasn’t ended, due to an intense travel addiction.

Earl Baron now writes WanderingEarl.com in hopes that he might inspire other people to follow in his footsteps, and have their own crazy travel goals.

Earl Baron

“I hope to prove that such a decision is not irresponsible, selfish or a waste of time, but instead, essential in order to avoid a life full of regrets,” he says.

WanderingEarl.com is also a blog about using open-minded global exploration to improving the lives of others in the world community.

“In short, we must not travel as travelers, but as global citizens and that is the message my blog aims to share,” Earl continues.

He does this by making deep and lasting connections with the people he meets on the road.

Earl is definitely a fantastic storyteller, so check his blog out whenever you get a chance.

Sharlene Earnshaw doubles the adventure

March 23, 2010

Based in Orange County, California, Sharlene Earnshaw and her twins explore the golden state, and show how other families can do it too.

Sharlene Earnshaw

Sharlene Earnshaw

She writes quit a lot about Southern California travel, but she also writes about travel destinations throughout North America.

Check out her blog posts on the Cabrillo National Monument near San Diego and the Arizona Natural History Museum to get a taste of her blogging style.

Last summer she traipsed around the Western US and Canada with her kids on a 24-day road trip, and she highlighted all the fantastic places they visited along the way.

Sharlene focuses on outdoor travel and National and State Parks as well.

She has a goal of creating guides for every single National Park, with activities and experiences specifically geared towards families.

“I realize that not every family has the resources or opportunity to become world travelers,” Sharlene admits “but I hope my experiences with my small children will inspire other famlies to find their own adventures, even if they are close to home.”

Caroline Cottom lives the Andean lifestyle

March 23, 2010

Together with her husband Thom Cronkhite, Caroline created the Heart of Ecuador blog in order to share her experiences of living in the Andean highlands of northern Ecuador.

Caroline Cottom

Caroline Cottom

“The blog has a threefold purpose: to share the vistas, music, and culture of Ecuador with our readers, to offer our reflections based on the spiritual work we have been involved in for several decades and to inspire others with information about Incan and pre-Incan symbols,” she says.

We are inspired by the artisans of the Andes, whose products are vibrant, rich in color and texture, of high quality, and based on symbols that have come down from pre-Incan times.

In addition to traveling throughout the country, they also sell textiles and silver jewelry that include symbols of eternal life (the spiral), the secret of life (the eight-pointed chakana), the growing seasons (found on the Incan calendar), and many more.

They believe that the Cotacachi area of Ecuador is a deeply spiritual place, and they explain it all in their blog post about it.

Their teachings spring from a three point theory based on inner experience, outer verification and truth.

They have just recently moved from Fiji to Ecuador, and it’s going to get very interesting to see what they get up to in South America.

Nick Machin’s bus adventures

March 23, 2010

After 20 years working as a journalist, Nick Machin is taking off.

On March 21, he’s getting on a bus in London, and ending up in New York, three months later.

“I have decided that time is too precious and life is too short not to at least try something a little risky,” Nick says.

Until then, he’s chronicling his life in Cardiff, Wales as he prepares to leave on his big adventure.

He’s spent some quality time with friends, frightening the postman who delivered his Chinese visa, and his trip to the Mongolian embassy.

Kayt Sukel and Jamie Pearson are travel savvy moms

March 23, 2010

After her 3-year-old daughter threw up in a hotel dining room in Belgium, Jamie Pearson decided to create TravelSavvyMom.com with her partner, Kayt Sukel.

These two understand that traveling with kids can be daunting.

Kayt Sukel

In the moments that followed the mortifying restaurant scenario, Jamie caught her daughter’s vomit in her cupped hand, called to the waiter for help, and was eventually handed a single paper napkin.

Travel Savvy Mom boasts a network of moms from all over the world who’ve had similar experiences and want to help.

“We’ll maybe even point out the funny side of family travel,” Kayt says.

“Yes, there is one.”

I especially enjoyed their articles about traveling to Quebec City with kids and Jamie Pearson’s article about dealing with separate seats on an airplane.

Kim Schloss Bittle makes a new life in Thailand

March 23, 2010

Worldly Experience is a blog that also serves as a reference and inspiration for those who have traveled to Thailand, who wish to travel to Thailand, who plan on traveling to Thailand and those who currently live in Thailand.

Kim Schloss Bittle

Kim Schloss Bittle

“I am discovering Thailand for the first time, along with most of my readers,” Kim Schloss Bittle says.

She visited the country for the first time in January, which was her first venture to Southeast Asia.

After that visit, she decided to move to Thailand and continue her adventures throughout the country and that half of the world.

While in Thailand, she will be blogging and writing about travel, but she will also be training to become a certified English as a Second Language teacher.

“I hope to take my readers along on my journey of finding a new job in a new country as well,” Kim continues.

“In this way, aspiring or existing ESL teachers across the globe will be able to relate to my experiences as well.”

Some of her more interesting posts include a story about taking the train to Surat Thani, in the south of Thailand, and the detailed list of what’s in her backpack.

Brendan van Son climbing the jungle gym

March 22, 2010

With a fresh, magazine-like style, Brendan van Son’s blog “The World is my Jungle Gym” is a breath of fresh air.

He wants to sweep his reader off to the place described therein.

Brendan van Son

Brendan van Son

His blog is meant to allow the reader to close their eyes and see the sights, smell the scents, and feel the emotion as if they were there along side the writer.

Brendan paints a picture for his readers on what life is like on the road.

He describes his experiences through the lens of an intrigued and curious child, and his words display his strong sense of adventure.

For example, he guides the reader through the process of traveling by bus through Colombia and hiking the Inca Trail.

“In the so-called real world people spend their time trying to find some means of proving their significance,” Brendan says.

“However, in the world I live in, the world of travel, I try to find the moments that make me feel insignificant in a greater world, and I hope my blog gets that message across.”

Joel Ward writes The Freedonia Post

March 22, 2010

What a funny guy.

I laughed out loud when I started reading this one.

Touted as “The world’s most entertaining travel site” and it might not even be a lie this time.

Joel Ward

Joel Ward vs. a giant bull

“The Freedonia Post is intended to be entertaining first, informative second,” Joel Ward says.

“It’s meant to show off what I consider the most important part of travel – the fun! So it’s usually silly, often random and always a skewed view of the world from a card carrying goofball.”

After working in the tourism industry for 20 years, Joel decided to spend more time in his chosen destinations than a “two day sit and spin”.

He wants to see the world in a deeper, more meaningful way by settling into a place weeks or months at a time.

His site is focused on the people, the customs and the strangeness of other cultures.

“Let’s face it, things that people do in foreign countries are just plain weird,” he continues.

“Of course, being a scatter-brained American in unfamiliar territory means I’m the one in the comedic targets more often than not.”
