Last year, I went on a big giant road trip through the American mid-west.
My initial plan was to go all the way from Arizona to Chicago via Route 66.
It never happened that way, I modified the route to travel along the interstates instead.
This is why I’m glad people like Sandi Wheaton exist.
Her blog, PictureRoute66.com encapsulates the trip that I wished I took.
One of the coolest things she did was take a time-lapse photo sequence of the entire length of the trip.
She took one picture every few seconds with a camera mounted to her dashboard.
Currently, this work is on display at two art galleries in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
“The whole project turned into a life-changing event for me,” Sandi says.
“I discovered American hospitality, learned how to accept assistance and contribution from others, re-affirmed my passion for travel and discovery, and realized that turning my job loss into a positive learning experience was a story people wanted to follow.”
Other things to check out on her site include some incredible black and white infrared film images that give an intense ghost-like quality to the places she visited.
And don’t forget her amazing writing style, a good example is her post on Slab City, a small town built out of RVs in the middle of the desert.
