There wasn't a whole lot to see at this site, but we did have a photo opp. in front of the recreated wooden cabin, and Mom got to recall how she'd badly stubbed her toe on a wooden stump inside the door from when she and Bro visited years ago (17 years ago to be exact.) We also saw a little school house that would not have been there in Laura's time, but was from the same general time period
As with all of the other LIW landmarks, there was a gift shop on site featuring all of the Little House books, tin cups, calico bonnets, and postcards. We picked up a few postcards to send to friends (which meant dealing with the least friendly cashiers we met along our trek), and then we were on our way. We weren't sure exactly what route we would take to head back east, but the Garmin took over and routed us slightly South first. After driving for a little while, we started seeing the signs for Coffeyville and Mom's random travel knowledge came into play. Apparently, Coffeyville is the "Google-center" of the United States, meaning that if you open googlemaps and see the map of the US, Coffeyville is in the center. Lebanon, Kansas is the geographic center of the contiguous United States, and we weren't far from there either, but it wasn't nearly as much fun as driving around Coffeyville looking for ... well, I'm not sure what we were looking for; what we found was a dead end near a railroad track and at that point we chose to make a U-turn and get back to the highway.
We spend the rest of the day driving toward Mansfield, Missouri... not without a few more stops of course... read on!
