So, we pulled out of the garage around 12:40 and drove through PA with scattered showers. We entered Ohio at approximately 3:25, along with a sudden torrential downpour. At that point, a stop seemed like a good idea. Mom is great at having a general sense that she's been in a place before and remembering something random about that place, like for instance, that somewhere around Youngstown, OH there is a great ice cream shop. We stopped for a snack at Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, rated "one of the country's best" by the travel channel. It was still pouring down rain and the Handel's we found (through a combination of instinct, Internet searching, and GPS navigation) is just a small shop. We pulled right up under the awning so that mom can practically lean out the window to get our coffee chocolate chip ice cream. I don't know if I would say it's some of the best, but then again we're spoiled by ice cream being from State College. Nevertheless, it was pretty yummy.

After that, we drive for 4 more hours and come to Indiana at 7:21. Along the way, we searched unsuccessfully for rainbows in the intermittent rain. In Indiana, we saw a row of nice looking rest stops; of course, the one we stop at is not so nice, but suffices for a bathroom break and stretching. Then it's back to driving.

I should mention that we've been listening to the book "Eat, Love, Pray," by Elizabeth Gilbert. She reads it herself which I think makes the rather pretentious and nutty points more tolerable. There are lots of similies, lots of metaphors. Overall it's good though. Listening and driving, and a good amount of talking too -- pretty sweet road trip so far. We've also each eaten a 12" sub, which my fabulous brother (the one who can drive) picked up for us before we got on the road; 6" for lunch and 6" for dinner, along with cherries and a little trail mix. This is also my first road trip with pretzel M'n'Ms, and I highly suggest it. :)

That's enough typing on the iPhone for now.

Are you in Indiana or Illinois now? Are you coming through my Chi-town?!

PS I'm not a huge fan of the pretzel M&Ms. I also tried the strawberry and peanut butter ones and didn't like them much. I think I'm a M&M purist.

Currently in Indiana, about to get on I-80W. We were just debating the virtues of going through Chicago or around it. Given that we'd be getting there in the middle of the night anyway, we opted for around and keeping right on driving till Wisconsin. I promise to hit you up next time though!!

I would also enjoy a road trip like this someday with my kids! I was captivated by those books when I was a child also. Have a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing. Love and hugs, Kristin and family
