After driving 1,841 miles we are exhausted but finally home!
We planned on spending the night half-way between San Francisco and San Diego, but since we did not know exactly how far we would make it when we were ready to turn in, we did not make a hotel reservation. Lesson learned and advice to future travelers: don't be spontaneous with your hotel stays in the California central coastal region! We stopped in Santa Barbara and, in spite of cell phones, a GPS navigation system, and an EVDO-capable laptop, we were unable to find suitable lodging. So, we thought, the heck with it, let's go home (600 miles in one day, all driven by Zrinko). To add insult to injury, we were treated to road work on the 405, which shut down 4 lanes (out of 5), and even our detours had detours as well as an accident! Gotta love it. We finally pulled into our driveway at 3:30AM.
