After one more night in yet another hotel we were on our way home to San Diego. We left South San Francisco and headed south on California's scenic Highway 1 (Cabrillo Highway). Our first stop was Monterey. We strolled along Cannery Row and Fisherman's Warf, and ate seafood--calamari and fish and chips. We planned on visiting the famous Monterey Aquarium, but the lines were prohibitive. Instead we drove through the scenic 17 Mile Drive at Pebble Beach, where we saw the flat-topped, leaning Monterey cypress trees, seals lounging on rocks and playing in the water, and, most of all, a very impressive marine layer. We were a little disappointed that the coastline was so "socked in" with fog, preventing us from seeing the ocean from the road, and a little surprised to see so many people at the beach on such a cold, misty day. We had many moments when the visibility was so bad off the shore that we thought we were at the edge of the world! We knew the ocean was there because we could hear the waves crashing below and catch a glimpse now and then. We stopped at Morro Bay for dinner before continuing south...The kids were real troupers...sitting in the car and entertaining themselves, especially Luka.
