I have now surfed on two continents!!! This afternoon Dad and I went surfing on Vivonne Beach, here on Kangaroo Island. It was great and strange, because we were the only people on the a huge, long beach and it was a beautiful day. The surf was pretty good, though, so I got a few rides.
This morning, we drove down to Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks to see New Zealand fur seals and climb on the rocks. The fur seals are smaller than the sea lions and not as endangered. They have thick fur, so they have to cool off in the water a lot and are more active than the sea lions. It was fun to watch them swim around and the view was incredible at Admirals Arch.
After we watched the seals, we went to Remarkable Rocks, which were made by a volcano millions of years ago. They are huge and look a lot like prehistoric caveman houses. We all climbed on the rocks and were careful not to fall off the big rock into the ocean.
From here, we went to Koala Walk, where we walked through eucalyptus trees and saw a few koalas. We have a new book called Diary of a Wombat, about a wombat who eats and sleeps all the time. If there was a Koala diary, it would say:
Morning: Slept
Noon: Slept
Afternoon: Ate leaves
Evening: Slept
The koalas just hang out in the trees and sleep - they are not scared of people and they get 80% of their water from the leaves, so they never have to get down, really! Pretty funny.
We stopped for picnic lunch at Hanson's Bay, which was an amazing beach that we had all to ourselves. The water was so clear and beautiful. We dug on the beach and ran around. It was great.
On the way to Vivonne Bay, the surfing beach, we stopped to see a baby kangaroo named Misty. A lady had rescued it after its mother was killed and she had to carry it in a sling until it was old enough to be out of the pouch! Misty is now one year old almost and she is very cute. We got to pet here, which was great.
Tonight before dinner, we took drinks out into the huge fields near our beach house. We saw lots of kangaroos up close, and watched them hop around in the tall grass next to the ocean. It was a great place to watch the sunset and we had a fun time! I am sorry to leave Kangaroo Island - it is one of the best places we have been and I hope we get to come back here sometime! Rachel and Nick are very nice and have a great place for kids.
