Today we had a great time!!! We left early this morning to go to Capri, an island off the coast of Italy. We had to catch a small motorboat from the beach at our hotel. To get there, we took a funicular seven floors down, then an elevator about ten stories down straight through the rocks to the beach. The boat ride to Capri was amazing. We went wicked fast and I got to sit on the very front and ride the waves.

The coastline is very dramatic - it is made of rock and goes straight down to the sea. When we got to Capri, we first stopped at the white grotto (Italian for cave) then the green grotto, then we went to the most famous, the Blue Grotto. There were lots of boats there and there were also lots of guys in small rowboats. The guys in the small rowboats give you a ride inside the Blue Grotto. We had to wait our turn - there was one guy who was in charge of lining everyone up and at one point he started shouting at another guy. They yelled back and forth, but no one could see why they were mad. Finally, we climbed into a small rowboat and then had to row over and pay three old Italian guys sitting in a boat near the cave. Then, we could go in. The hole was so tiny. When the tide came in, it was only about 1 or 2 feet high. When we went through, we had to lie flat on our backs and our rower guy kneeled on the floor of the boat and pushed us through. Inside the cave, it was pitch black and the cave was huge - the ceilings were at least thirty feet high. When you turned around and looked out the entrance, you could see why it is called the Blue Grotto. The ocean was sky blue, but neon, and it looked like someone had lights on underneath the water. Some of the rowers were singing. It was very cool. Then we rowed back out and got back in the motorboat.

When we got to Capri, we walked all the way up to the town. Capri is very beautiful and has great views out to the sea. The town is high up in the mountains. We walked around and then had an amazing lunch of gnocchi, pasta, and the best tiramisu for dessert. But my favorite part was that we got to ride in a convertible taxi on the way back down to the harbor. That was awesome!

Tonight, we went to dinner in Positano. During dinner, we suddenly heard fireworks and rushed outside to see. We found out that tonight was the festival of St. Mary for one of the churches. They had great fireworks over the beach, then music and they carried the statue of Mary through the streets. Positano looked really beautiful with candles and lights everywhere.

The motorboat took us back to our hotel beach, where we played on the rocks and got ice cream and searched for sea glass and jumped in the ocean. It is a great beach. We are going to come back tomorrow!
