We are now in Marrakech, where mopeds rule! Yesterday we left Dar Ahlam and drove to Ait Benhaddou, a cool Kasbah town on a hill where they film lots of movies. When we arrived, they were filming a scene from the "Prince of Persia". We got to see about twelve guys on horseback with flags who were galloping into the gates of the Kasbah. That was cool!

We also met some girls from the town - they started talking to us. Khalid talked to them in Arabic and found out there names, and then he asked me to show them my DS. They were very interested and one of them wanted to play it, so I showed her how to do it. Then we interviewed them, but only as a group because there were so many of them and they kept laughing.

Here is the interview:

Ages 8-11
Ait Benhaddou, Morocco

Where do you live?

Ait Benhaddou, just south of the High Atlas Mountains

Do you go to school?

Yes! We are in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades

What do you do for fun?

Go to the Cyber Cafe to play video games (it costs 2 dirham for one hour or about 30 US cents) and play with our friends

What are you afraid of?

Some said the dark, others said scary movies, some said nightmares

What would you tell other children in the world?

Be good to your parents and study well

We said goodbye to the girls, then drove over the High Atlas mountains - they were so high and the road was very narrow and steep. Luckily, Khalid was a good driver. We saw one accident where an army truck hit a car, but they were okay. Lots of the villages looked like they were built right into the mountains. We saw lots of donkeys, sheep, and goats along the way.

We we got to Marrakech, we said goodbye to Khalid and Khalid, and went to Riad Anyela, where we are staying. It is a small house and has a pool in the middle and only 5 rooms. The owners are staying here with two of their friends - they are very nice. We had dinner on the roof in the Magic Carpet room, which is actually a big terrace surrounded by curtains and covered in carpets. The moon is now a waxing gibbis and we could hear the call to prayer - it was a cool dinner. Sandra, who helps at the riad, came up and read us the story of Yela, who used to live in this house. They have a page of her diary downstairs. She met her husband on the roof at night when her parents were asleep.

Today, we went in to the main square in Marrakech. I saw snake charmers and got to hold a mamba, watch two cobras fight, hold a chameleon and a strange orange lizard, and a turtle. We rode a horse and buggy back to our riad after lunch, and it was nice to get off the streets away from all the mopeds - everyone rides them everywhere! It is a crazy city.
