So, the first question everyone asks me when they hear I am traveling around the world with my family for the next year is:

That is a good question...

My parents told me that we were going to travel round the world right before school ended in June. I was very happy when I heard this because it means my dad will be at home (or wherever we are) every day this year! He traveled for his job a lot and I missed him, so it will be cool to be together. We talked a little about where we all wanted to go, then my mom and dad started planning. My first choice was Australia (I love the movie "Kangaroo Jack"!). I was born in South Africa and we go there at least once a year, so I knew that would be on the list. We have also traveled to Patagonia and I hope we go back there, too. So, a few weeks later, here is the list of countries we will visit:

Canada (to see the polar bears!)
South Africa
New Zealand
Tahiti (maybe)
Easter Island

We will take planes, trains, cars, ferries, camels, elephants and donkeys to get from place to place. My sister is a little nervous about riding elephants to see tigers in India. She is afraid tigers like to eat elephants.

We did a test-drive trip to Ireland and England in June, and also visited my grandparents and cousins in Nashville. The trip to Ireland was fun - we stayed in a real castle (with murder holes and a dungeon), went to a medieval feast (another dungeon!), did falconry (I flew a Harris hawk) and I met a nine-year old boy on the beach in Connemara and "hurled" with him and his two brothers. (Hurling is a sport kids play in Ireland.) I am going to interview a kid my age (or close) everywhere I go so I interviewed him. He was really nice - I wish I could have hung out with him some more. I interviewed my cousin, Hannah, in Nashville and my friend, Jake, in London. I will tell you more abou the interviews later.

We have been in the Beaverkill Valley, at our little house in the Catskills, since July 4th. I go to my favorite camp every day, swim in the rive and pond, catch frogs and tadpoles - it is great! I also rode my bike 200 miles in five weeks to raise money for the Surf Shack Township surfers in Cape Town. I raised over $1000, I think! I wonder how many miles I will travel over the next year? It will be fun to count them up. Last weekend my friend Nicholas and his dad and my dad and I blazed a trail in the woods between our houses. I kind of feel like we will be blazing a trail the whole year because we have not been to a lot of the places before.

Next week we will go to New York City next to get our shots for the trip (Ouch!) and say goodbye to my best friends. I am having a sleepover with my friend Matthew and will be sad to say good bye to him for a year.

Then we head to Maine to say good bye to my Gram Anne and Grandpa Steve and cousins before flying to Spain in the middle of August. I have to start packing my backpack now. One thing I know I will bring - my new Nintendo DS and some Pokemon cards.

So that is it for now...more about school (or no school) and how I feel about all this next time.

Re: Lekker rys!
Dear Ewa,

Thank you. I wish you were coming along too! I wish you could be our tutor - do you want to be our tutor on our journey around the world? I will write you about our first stop, Spain.

We miss you. Lulu is fine. We got an Ipod for the family for the trip and Lu loves it.
